Latex Nun
Black-and-white latex in a nun's habit configuration is a concept that earns its place through execution, and Sayuri Kurohoshi delivers it with a straight-faced precision that keeps the series from tipping into parody. The look is a black latex long-sleeved top and a pleated skirt, with a white latex collar panel and a white latex hood beneath a fitted black latex cap; the reference is clear, and the material translation is exact. Extreme, heelless platform stilettos in black close out the look at the foot, adding height and instability that quietly undermine the solemnity of everything above.
The series started as a public outing; they walked around outside in full costume, and the reception from passers-by was not warm. Back to the atelier it was, and the clean studio background ended up serving the series well regardless; the look is graphic enough to need space rather than context, and the neutral grey sets it off cleanly.
Sayuri carries the concept with the same composed quality she brought to the sealed-and-locked contemporary art series; there is no wink at the camera, no acknowledgment of the absurdity, just a model holding the frame. That restraint is what makes it work.
